Effacement: Thinning of the cervix
You might feel uncomfortable, but irregular, not very painful contractions or nothing at all.
Effacement is often expressed in percentages.
At 0 percent effacement, the cervix is at least 2 centimeters (cm) long, or very thick.
Can you feel when you start to dilate?
You may have no signs or symptoms that your cervix has started to dilate or efface. Contractions help the cervix dilate and efface from the beginning stages to the full 10 centimeters. Still, you may be dilated slightly without noticeable contractions.
How can you thin out your cervix?
Evening Primrose Oil
These may be taken orally or vaginally – one to three capsules 3 times each day for the last 4 weeks of pregnancy to soften and thin the cervix.
How quickly can the cervix soften?
Effacement: Your cervix ripens.
By the time the big day rolls around, your cervix will have stretched from around 1 inch in width to paper thinness. Your doctor or midwife may start checking for gradual effacement during your last two months of pregnancy with internal exams during your prenatal visits.
How long after your cervix softens does labor start?
It can still be a week or even two weeks before labour begins. Once your contractions are 3-5 minutes apart, each lasting 40-60 seconds, and they have continued this way for at least an hour, it is likely that your labour has started, and that your cervix is 3-4 cm dilated (or open).
